Alerta 2006!
Some quantitative data related to the number of armed conflicts, situations of tension, peace processes or people being demobilised which appear in Alerta 2006! Report on conflicts, human rights and peace building may give the impression that the state of the world improved during the year. However, a qualitative and detailed analysis of the indicators suggests that the outlook is less optimistic, or that some trends which have become consolidated in recent years should be considered more critically. Among these are the immense difficulties involved in the rehabilitation and resolution of structural factors in countries which have had armed conflicts in the recent past, the enormous extent of humanitarian crises such as the one affecting the region of Darfur (Sudan), the oblivion of contexts in which there are populations in danger because their basic needs are not being dealt with, the increase in international military expenditure, the threats to the international system of human rights as a result of anti-terrorist strategies, the little progress made towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, or the little attention paid to gender related issues in peace building initiatives. In short, there are too many shortcomings in vital areas which affect the development and future of individuals, societies and future generations.
